As the title states, why does my website load so slow? specifically my "index" page loads slow.
-any tips of software to downsize the photos? is that needed?
-is my website hosting server to slow?

There are some images on your Page that are large in size which is causing Higher Load times. The more the size of your Media, the more time it will take to load your Page, so this is not an issue with the Template. Additionally, you can check the Documentation > Start > Optimization Tips Section for complete instructions to Optimize the Assets and Server Configurations to speed up your website.
