I know nothing about Gulp and scss, only plain HTML and CSS. Can you explain and help me with how to use Gulp and SCSS with the canvas theme?
Also, I'm planning to use Hugo to manage my blog posts. Do you recommend this way of managing blog posts?

You do not need to use Gulp/SCSS in order to use Canvas. You can simply use Canvas as Plain HTML/CSS at your convenience. It will work just fine. Gulp/SCSS is included for more advanced users who would like to extend Canvas with their Custom Applications.
You can use Hugo but we do not provide any support for integrating any external Plugins. These should be done manually and should work fine as Canvas's Codes do not conflict with other plugins.
